All irrigation systems that are attached to a drinking water supply should have a Backflow Prevention device installed to prevent water accidently leaving the irrigation system and enterring the household water supply.

The device is usually installed at the point where the irrigation system is taken off the household water supply. In most areas of Australia, this is a legal requirement.
